If life is a game then how do you gain XP?
By doing stuff, right? Every time you do something new, its an experience. You experience it and get life experience (XP) through it.
However, if you do all the same stuff there is always diminishing returns. In any game you play, you need to change to harder level mobs in new areas to gain more XP.
I think its the same in life. I suspect that memory works better when dealing with novelty. If you want to remember, then do new things, have special experiences. Else it won’t record in memory. Do you follow?
Why would memory save something if it doesn’t give you anything new? When doing routine chores or repeating the same action day in and day out — you don’t really remember it. However, you remember the experiences that stand out — those that are new.
The main reason why I like to think about everything as XP: It makes decision making a lot easier. Whenever I’m confronted with a decision I usually ask: Will it give me XP? If yes, I will consider it — this helps when confronted with new ideas or opportunities that you want to avoid at first instinct. They are always XP — and XP is usually not bad or good, it simply is an experience. You learn from it. In some cases you learn even better from “bad XP” — mistakes is the best teacher because it makes us know to avoid doing the same wrong thing again.
I tried to explain this to my cousin, who promptly asked me, “What level are you then?”. I don’t know. Does it matter? Probably not.
But its a fun thought game.
