Don’t have expectations on your creativity

A picture of a lightbulb is associated with someone having an idea, an example of creativity.
  1. When you go for a walk, or sit down by your notebook with a pen in hand — leave your expectations out of it. They likely constrain you more than they inspire you.
  2. Basically don’t force yourself to write or think certain things. Don’t expect them to be of some quality.
  3. Instead, allow yourself to roam freely in your mind — doodle, draw, scream, use words however you want — there are no expectations on what it should be. Let yourself be what you are.
  4. This is good because it frees your mind from judgment of itself. Thoughts like “I must fill this page with profound ideas in text” are completely unnecessary to the process.
  5. Ultimately, this lack of judgment of yourself will allow for more time actually thinking and being aware — which will result in more positive experiences and a higher likelihood you will do it again.
  6. The idea behind this is at for every time you sit down with a pen or spend time thinking there is a x% chance that you come up with something important. It might be 1%, 10%, 50% depending on the day, person, or problem at hand.
  7. So it is crucial that you do this process many times and are not dismayed by a lack of progress. Perhaps you need to go on 10 walks to come up with 1 idea that’ll change your life. That doesn’t mean those 9 walks before that were wasted.
  8. So enjoy your creative time doing whatever suits you best at that moment.

Thanks for reading.
