Don’t have expectations on your creativity

- When you go for a walk, or sit down by your notebook with a pen in hand — leave your expectations out of it. They likely constrain you more than they inspire you.
- Basically don’t force yourself to write or think certain things. Don’t expect them to be of some quality.
- Instead, allow yourself to roam freely in your mind — doodle, draw, scream, use words however you want — there are no expectations on what it should be. Let yourself be what you are.
- This is good because it frees your mind from judgment of itself. Thoughts like “I must fill this page with profound ideas in text” are completely unnecessary to the process.
- Ultimately, this lack of judgment of yourself will allow for more time actually thinking and being aware — which will result in more positive experiences and a higher likelihood you will do it again.
- The idea behind this is at for every time you sit down with a pen or spend time thinking there is a x% chance that you come up with something important. It might be 1%, 10%, 50% depending on the day, person, or problem at hand.
- So it is crucial that you do this process many times and are not dismayed by a lack of progress. Perhaps you need to go on 10 walks to come up with 1 idea that’ll change your life. That doesn’t mean those 9 walks before that were wasted.
- So enjoy your creative time doing whatever suits you best at that moment.
